Basic Tips for Cross-Stitch Machine Embroidery

Cross Stitch Embroidery

Cross-stitch machine embroidery is a type of embroidery in which x-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to create an embroidery design on a project.  Cross-stitch machine embroidery designs are quite similar to regular machine embroidery designs. The only difference is the artwork of the pattern is done in small x’s and (sometimes) line outlines, rather than fill stitches, free standing lace, outline or applique stitches.

Cross-stitch designs are a great style of embroidery and allow you to create beautifully detailed projects.  Let’s take a look at all the basic elements involved in cross-stitch embroidery designs.

Count Size

Cross Stitch Machine Embroidery

Cross-stitching is mainly based on count size. Cross-stitch designs are available in several different densities and sizes, with the most common being 14-count, 16-count, 18-count and 22-count. These count sizes indicate the number of stitches per inch in a design. The higher the count, the smaller and denser the x’s will be. Here is a simple guide to go by:

  • 14-count/inch – fairly loose, large x’s.
  • 16-count/inch – medium density, medium x’s.
  • 18-count/inch – more dense, smaller x’s.
  • 22-count/inch – most dense, smallest x’s.

How do you determine the suitable count size for your project?

  1. First, check the size of design in each count and then decide which size of design will be perfect for your project.
  2. If the design size doesn’t make any big difference then you have two possible options:
  • If you’re choosing scenery designs, a count size of 16-count, 18-count or 22-count will work best. The designs featuring people and landscape will look nicer if the density is high.
  • If you’re designing something more abstract such as alphabets, numeric characters or simple patterns, choose a count size of 14 or 16. An individual cross stitch design looks perfect in a 14-count size and the result is similar to a traditional hand cross-stitched design.
  1. If you’re working with a medium to heavy weight fabric then go with 18-count or 22-count size. It will give you a look similar to regular embroidery designs.
  2. If your fabric is of light weight then choose a 14-count size to give it a lower density. Avoid 16-count or 18-count size for light weight fabrics! The stitches will be too dense and heavy for the fabric.

Thread for Machine Cross-Stitching

Cross Stitch Machine Embroidery Designs

Regular 40wt poly or rayon machine embroidery thread works well for machine cross-stitch.  Make sure to have enough thread colors on hand, as 3-4 gradient colors of each color family may be needed for cross-stitch designs, depending on the detail and shading in the design.

For a more traditional cross-stitch look, you may want to choose 30wt cotton machine embroidery thread, but choose a 14-count size when using cotton thread, as 16-count and 18-count sizes will look bulky with the thicker thread. Cotton thread is also more delicate, so use cotton threads carefully as they break easily.

Fabric for Cross-Stitch Designs

Cross Stitch Embroidery Design

Cross-stitch designs look great on country-style fabrics. These fabrics are not too expensive or delicate. Denims, linens, cotton, muslin, canvas, etc. are perfect for this type of design. Make sure to choose a fabric that isn’t too stretchy or has an open weave.

Stabilizers for Cross-Stitch Designs

Stabilizing of a design depends on fabric, count size, and the type of project it is going on. A few things that you must need to keep in mind while stabilizing your project are:

  • Hoop your fabric and stabilizer properly, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Use NO-SHOW cut away stabilizer if your fabric is of light weight. Use cut-away stabilizer if your fabric is of medium or heavy weight. Use more than one layer in a criss-cross placement, if your design is very dense. Always use a fresh, sharp needle!
  • If the weave of your fabric is loose or it has the tendency to absorb stitches then use a thin water soluble topping film over your fabric, in addition to the stabilizer under the fabric. The film will prevent stitches from sinking into the fabric and the detail of the design will stand out better.
  • Remove jumps carefully after each color stop when embroidering. The result will be much better and the jumps much easier to snip, if you do them as you go, rather than waiting until the end of the process.
  • When your embroidery is finished, un-hoop it and cut away the stabilizer. Turn the embroidery fabric over, apply a towel barrier and lightly iron the backside of the fabric to help it lay flat and smooth.

We hope these tips will help you get started with cross-stitching.   It is a fun and easy machine embroidery technique and will allow you to create many memorable projects for your friends and family.  For more machine embroidery designs of all types and free weekly samples, visit the OPW Mall, where YOU are always #1.
